Hiking: It’s More Than Just a Mountain

Hiking: It's More Than Just a Mountain

Like to hike? Considering ourselves avid hikers, we found a new appreciation for hiking once learning more about Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the native communities living there. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a beautiful coastal mountainous system located in the north of Colombia.

The breathtaking mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast of Colombia are the sacred ancestral lands of four Indigenous Groups: the Kogi, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kankuamo. To these groups (and to some of us), the Sierra Nevada is the heart of the world. They live within different areas of the mountain but share the common belief that they are the guardians of the heart of the World. The say the Sierra Nevada is surrounded by an invisible ‘black-line’ that encompasses the sacred sites of their ancestors and demarcates their territory.

At the core of the spirituality of all the people of the Sierra Nevada is the belief that their entire mountain range is a living entity. They believe the great mother then birthed the people of the Sierra Nevada and gave a mandate to uphold her Original Law: that all her creation must be protected and nurtured.

Through deep meditations, ritual offerings, songs and prayers carried out along a network of interconnected sacred sites that link the snowy peaks to the river deltas and estuaries to the Sea, these Native Groups follow the great mother’s law of caring for and nurturing the Sierra Nevada. By doing so, they believe they maintain the equilibrium of life not only for their sacred mountains but for the entire world.

RuntheWorld and Be Chevere Tours present a mindful hiking adventure near Santa Maria in search of the ancestral indigenous communities of the Sierra Nevada in Colombia. The projects we support during this week in the middle of luxuriant fauna and flora are the creation of a University of Ancestral Knowledge led by the association Aiprodensa, local cacao farmer family business and a complimentary education association called Costeño Social. The importance and value of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to the locals that revolve their lives around caring for these mountains is something we have allowed to become near and dear to our hearts and want to share with others who have a passion for exploring and hiking as well.

Hiking is more than just an activity taking place on different types of terrain. Hiking through the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and taking in the religious beliefs of the Indigenous Peoples is something that is beyond comparison.
